Cup of Tea – Spotify Wrapped

Another year has passed and another Spotify Wrapped has arrived! If you don’t know what that is, Spotify Wrapped is when the music platform Spotify collects your listening data and statistics from the year and compiles it into a fun, colorful slideshow. It tells you what your top artists were, your top songs, your total listening minutes, and your different music ‘eras.’

And this year, as I was looking through my music’s lineup, and sharing my statistics with others, I had a deep conviction about my listening habits this year.

This conviction came when Spotify was breaking down my different music eras. I had three distinct ones: my Royalcore fantasy instrumentals, my wanderlust indie Christian moment, and my pink pilates princess strut pop era (consisting of none other than Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, and Sabrina Carpenter).

When my friends saw this particular era, it gave them pause. “Didn’t you tell me Sabrina Carpenter was bad and I shouldn’t be listening to her?” Nervously, I nodded and said, “yes, but it was just the clean version of one of her songs.”

But this is where I felt convicted.

What would happen if we were sharing our Spotify Wrapped with someone and we didn’t get a chance to explain why we choose to spend our time listening to a certain artist or song? Would that change our habits? Would that impact how we spend our listening year?

As Christians, we are called to steward our time well and love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind. Though small, our listening habits are another way to direct our minds and hearts towards God.

Furthermore, I find that music says a lot about a person, and gives a very clear reflection of their desires. And I was quite disappointed with what my musical statistics said about me. It didn’t reflect someone who was passionate about Jesus, but someone who was enveloped and focused solely on the things of this world. And if I were to share my Spotify Wrapped with a non-believing friend, I’d want them to immediately see my love for Jesus instead of my love for the things of this world. Not as a way for me to look super godly, but to show them that Jesus was so good I was more than happy to spend my year listening to music that glorified and praised Him, rather than the more popular, secular songs.

Though small, the music I listen to is a way to glorify God. This doesn’t mean Taylor Swift won’t sneak onto my playlists, but it does mean I want to seek listening to Christian music more intentionally. Even if no one sees my Spotify Wrapped in 2025, I will have spent my year listening to music that helped me grow closer to Christ, not pull me away, and that in of itself is enough.

Every little thing matters during our race in life, and I hope by reading this you will be encouraged to start planting seeds even in the little things, like the music you listen to.

With much love,

– Kami
