Cup of Tea- Never Thirsty

John 4:14 KJV

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jesus speaks the verse above to the woman at the Samarian well, trying to help her understand that what she needs is salvation from her sins, not water from a well. If you’re not familiar with the story, go and read it now in John 4:1-42.

If you are already familiar with the story, you know the ending, that the woman and almost her entire town believe in Jesus. I suppose many who are reading this have done the same already. You, the Christian, are my audience today!

When we got saved, we drank of Jesus’ living water. And yet, as Christians, we often seem to yearn for unhealthy things. Oh how we long to freely follow Him! But it seems impossible. What is this then? Is God not true? It clearly says that those who drink of the water of salvation shall never thirst again. Are we then not saved? Did we somehow not truly drink?

No. We did drink. We are saved. The temptation and the guilt are the only tools Satan can use against a believer. He came to steal, to kill, and to destroy: He cannot destroy a Child of God. He can’t steal your Salvation. He can’t kill your joy. But he can steal your happiness. He can kill your body. And that means He can still try to undermine and destroy your will to follow Jesus.

How do we combat this? There are just two ordered steps:

  1. Submit yourself wholly to God.
  2. Resist the Devil, and he shall flee from you.

When the temptation comes to thirst after an unholy thing, pray. Remind yourself and God that you are His and He is yours. Then, say no. Tell the Devil you aren’t letting him win even one more battle! Believe in your God’s power and authority over Satan and in His love for you. The Devil trembles at the sight of a Christian kneeling, and he falters at the sound of faith-filled prayer. When you (but it is Christ’s voice that he hears from your mouth) tell him, “Get thee behind me!” he can do no more than run.

In this way, you start to understand how “the steps of the righteous are ordered by the Lord, and he delighteth in His way; though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him in His hand.”

Delight yourself in God’s way! Submit yourself wholly to His way. Resist temptation. And delight some more in the way He leads, never again thirsty.

Today’s fight verses to memorize:

John 4:14

James 4:7

Psalm 37:4, 23-24

I’ll see you along the Way!

Great reminder to train with the Sword of the Spirit, by hiding it in our hearts, to resist the Devil!
My church has sung a scripture song of James 4:7 for as long as I can remember.
