Faithful in the Busyness

My beloved spoke and said to me, “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me. Song of Songs 2:10, NIV.

Busyness can often feel like both a blessing and a curse. You are constantly doing things: going to school and/or work, going to sports practice or clubs, visiting friends, doing chores, and many other activities. It’s so easy to get swept up in the activities of life that we often forget the most important thing: spending time with God and being in His Word. Or perhaps we find ourselves with such crazy schedules that we can’t spend time reading the Word at all.

And let me tell you, I am one of those people who often feels this way. I read the Word daily, but that’s all I do–read. I don’t get into a good conversation with God, or regularly connect with Him through prayer. However, the Lord is faithful and has been reminding me to spend time with Him and showing me different ways how.

So, what can we do? How do we stay faithful in the busyness?

The most important thing to remember is that Jesus loves you and wants to have a relationship with you. What would you do if you wanted to hang out with one of your besties? You would set aside a time to do so, of course. If you find it helpful, pick a time that suits your schedule best and put it on your calendar (either on paper or phone) so you can focus on spending some time with Jesus.

Then, when that date comes, there are many things you could do! You could study a Bible verse in-depth (looking at the original Hebrew or Greek is such a fun thing to do), take communion, read a devotional, play worship music, intercede for people, write letters to God (this is something I am trying to do more lately and something I recommend especially to the writers among us), journal, or many other things! (Feel free to drop ideas down below in the comments–we would love to see them!) It doesn’t have to be a lot; you can start out praying for five minutes a day and build up from there. This takes discipline, so starting slowly can be more helpful in the end.

Okay, but what if your schedule is so busy that you can’t find any spare time–and you can’t get rid of the commitments that are in your schedule easily? Well, our relationship with the Lord should be first above all, so reevaluating these commitments would be advised. However, there are plenty of things you can do when you are constantly on the move. For example, if you are driving yourself to school or work, you could turn on your car’s radio and play Christian worship music as you drive, or you could pop in an audio recording of the Bible. Or you could listen to a Christian podcast, a sermon, or anything God-oriented! (Only do this if you are allowed to listen to music and such while driving in your country, state, or province.) If you don’t have your license yet and are on the school bus or public transportation, you can listen to the same things with earphones on. If you would rather not listen to audio as you travel (or can’t), you can pray and talk to God–eyes open if you are driving of course! Praying is one of the most important things a Christian can do, and there are many things you can pray about. You could pray for good grades, a good day at work, that He would show you someone to minister to, or you can even ask Him something like what His favorite food was when He came to live among us. You can also pick a Bible verse to meditate, memorize, and to whisper under your breath all day to encourage you in whatever you are doing. These are some things that can be done almost anywhere, and can help you spend time with the Lord–even in the busyness! Praying is one of the biggest, because that is when you are talking directly with the Lord.

But always remember, Jesus loves you, and He won’t condemn you if you forget to talk to Him for a bit. He welcomes your presence the moment you do, and He’s enraptured to hear your voice.

In conclusion, spending time with Him isn’t as hard as we make it out to be, with many different avenues to do so. Praying, studying and meditating on His Word, and worshiping are some of the many ways to spend time, with many more things?

Now, how about we go spend some time with our Beloved?
