Cup of Tea – Counted Days

Steaming cup on a wooden table with three wooden crosses visible through a window.

I recently watched a reel on social media where a gal was reading the story of a tattoo artist. A woman came in and the artist was asked to do a simple tattoo, just three numbers. The numbers were the number of days the woman’s daughter was clean before she relapsed and lost her life to her addiction. Her mother knew everyone would remember the day she lost her battle not the days she fought. She wanted to remember the days her daughter tried, not the day her daughter failed. When the woman left she asked the artist to keep the stencil and to do any number tattoo free for those struggling with addiction or losing someone to addiction. The artist goes on to talk about posting the stencil and a sign on the wall saying “Days of Sobriety Tattoo Always Free Any Number Because Everyday Counts”.  The artist proceeds to tell multiple peoples stories, with numbers ranging from just hours to 4 digits. The artist tells about doing a number tattoo with tally marks that marks the growing amount of time this kid has been sober.

That reel got me thinking.

God doesn’t count our days like the world does. The world counts our every miss step and every failed attempt at things. But God counts our days with Him.

God doesn’t count the days of relapses into sin, He counts the hours, the days, the time with Him.

God is that one, the one that is proud of everyday we make it, known and unknown. He’s the parent waiting for a call, the one waiting for us to call to want out of sin again. The one that celebrates with us even in the private of our own hearts and minds. God sees us beyond our mistakes, beyond our sins.

He gave us a way to Him, one that is always just one step away. But it can be easy not to see that. It can be easy to be blinded by the past. Thankfully God isn’t.

God is counting every call, every minute, every hour, every day.

God calls us to be in the world but not of it. That’s a hard thing to do. It’s easy to be of the world in the way we handle things without even realizing it. It’s easy to count the days the way the world does.

Today I have a challenge question for you. Whose days are you counting the way the world does?
