A Great Awakening

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

This quote, by Edmund Burke, is so powerful it’s almost all that needs to be said. I believe that we are seeing evil prevail more and more all around us, and yet instead of fleeing from it the world is embracing it.

Recently, Sight and Sound Theatre has produced its second movie: A Great Awakening, which follows Reverend George Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin through the spiritual awakening that Whitfield stirred in America after he was kicked out of England. The film also shows the struggles that the founding fathers faced when laying the framework of the country, and how Ben Franklin pushed for prayer in the assembly. But the primary focus was on George Whitefield and how his preaching of the Words of God lit a fire wherever he went.  While watching the film, not only was I reminded of the power in God’s Word, but also of how it only took one man and a pulpit to spread a spiritual fire across a country.

After the film concluded, the meditation and deep thinking process commenced. It took a few days for my brain to stop constantly focusing on my analysis of the production, but once it did I knew that America needs another Great Awakening. Once having made this conclusion, my schedule picked up and that was no longer a high-priority thought in my mind. However, something my pastor said at church this past Sunday made me start thinking again. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but it made me look around and see all the people in my church, it made me think about all my friends who go to different churches than myself, and it made me think of all the churches in my area that have congregations. I then remembered the quote by Edmund Burke: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”  In my area alone, there are tons of churches and thousands of people who attend those churches on a Sunday morning. That is a lot of people. In dark times we can begin to question God and whether or not He’s working. Christians, we have God inside of us. We are God’s Temple here on earth. God is always with us. Yet we wait for God to move instead of stepping out in faith and trusting Him to work through our actions. Yes, God can use us if we do nothing, but imagine what He can do if we give Him something to work with?  George Whitefield came from a poor household and looked at what God used him to do. All George had was a strong voice, his Bible, and a traveling pulpit he built and God used him to light a fire across a nation. Child of God no matter where you are you have a platform, and as long as you have the Words of God inside of you, God can use it in a mighty way.  Let us not sit back and do nothing while waiting for God to work through us. Christians, let us rise and spark a revival throughout this nation, and throughout this entire World.  If God could use just one man and a traveling pulpit to reach thousands, how could God use you and your platform to reach those around you?
